Berezovsky wins libel case over Litvinenko murder claim
The British-based businessman Boris Berezovsky has won his claim for libel after being falsely named on Russian state television as the man behind the murder of the former Moscow agent Alexander Litvinenko. Mr Litvinenko, a strong critic of then Russian President Vladimir Putin, was poisoned with radioactive polonium-210 and died in London in November 2006, prompting a murder investigation that implicated Russia. Yesterday Mr Berezovsky, 63, was awarded £150,000 in libel damages against both the TV channel RTR Planeta and Vladimir Terluk, the man who made the allegations, which were also broadcast on satellite television in the UK in April 2007. During the...

Cambodia puts the cremation site of Pol Pot on 'historic' tourist trail
The place where the body of Pol Pot, the former Khmer Rouge leader, was unceremoniously burned in a pile of rubbish is set to be the latest location from Cambodia's dark recent history to be transformed into a tourist spot. In a controversial move that underlines the increasing allure of the country's genocidal history and the importance of tourists to Cambodia's coffers, the government has decided to "preserve and develop" Anlong Veng. The jungle town in the far north of the country was the last stronghold of the rebel movement responsible for the deaths of up to 2 million people. In a statement, the...

China trying to 'annihilate Buddhism'
The Dalai Lama has accused the Chinese authorities of trying to "annihilate Buddhism" in Tibet as he commemorated a failed uprising against China's rule over the region. His angry comments appeared to signal frustration with fruitless efforts to negotiate a compromise with China, but he said he would not abandon talks. China shot back, accusing the Tibetan spiritual leader of using deceptions and lies to distort its policy in the region. The passionate back-and-forth highlighted the distrust, anger and frustration that separates the two sides and leaves little hope for success in recently resumed talks. Beijing has demonized the Dalai Lama and accused him of wanting independence for Tibet,...

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Initial results from Iraq's national election are likely to be released by Thursday, Iraqi and U.N. officials said on Wednesday, as further signs emerged of a strong showing for Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Iraqi's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki speaks to reporters after voting at a polling station in the Green Zone in Baghdad March 7, 2010. (REUTERS/Ali Abbas/Pool) The Iraqi National Alliance (INA), a largely Shi'ite group that is challenging Maliki's bid to win a second term, told a news conference that according to their informal tallies the prime minister was ahead in at least 10 of Iraq's 18...

World's top scientists to review climate panel
SETH BORENSTEIN AP Science Writer= WASHINGTON (AP) ? The world's biggest scientific guns are being called in to mop up after a trickle of unsettling errors in the authoritative reports written by a global warming panel. The United Nations and the beleaguered Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said Wednesday that a Netherlands-based group of 15 national academies of science will study how the warming panel does its job. That independent review will be finished by the end of August, said Robbert Dijkgraaf, co-chairman of the group, the InterAcademy Council. A panel of experts created by the council will try to figure out how better to catch and correct errors, Dijkgraaf said. It will...

Biden: Palestinians deserve 'viable' state
updated 12:30 p.m. ET March 10, 2010 RAMALLAH, West Bank - Vice President Joe Biden's displeasure over an Israeli plan to enlarge an east Jerusalem settlement was on display Wednesday as he warned against actions that "inflame tensions" and reassured his Palestinian hosts that they deserve a sustainable, independent state. The Israeli plans have overshadowed Biden's visit, meant to promote a new round of U.S.-led negotiations, and drew Palestinian accusations that Israel is not serious about peace. Israel apologized for embarrassing Biden with the timing of its announcement, but made clear it had no intention of reversing its plan. Capping a day of meetings with Palestinian leaders, Biden...

Why Punish Iran for What Israel Has Already Done?
Article by WorldNews.com Correspondent Dallas Darling. As the Western Powers continue to criticize Iran for its nuclear enrichment program, and while they try and pressure Russia and China to impose stiffer economic sanctions, maybe it would be an opportune time to remember that for decades Israel has developed nuclear weapons and has tried to keep its program a secret. In fact, Israel has produced more than 200 nuclear warheads, a number of which can be deployed on nuclear submarines, long-range aircraft, and missiles.(1) Starting in the 1950's, Israel begin producing uranium for its nuclear missiles program. It is one of the few nations that has not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation...

China's Exports Rise 46%
BEIJING —China announced Wednesday that its exports climbed 46 percent in February from a year earlier. Economists said the data signaled a rebound in consumer demand from the United States and other Western markets after the financial crisis last year. It was the third consecutive month of increases in Chinese exports and the fastest growth in three years. Orders from the United States, the European Union and Japan accounted for almost half the growth, following a pickup in demand from emerging markets in the previous two months. Chinese imports also rose 45 percent over the previous year, led by crude oil as factories stepped up production. Some economists said the figures indicated...
